Eight EV Service Questions

Porsche mechanics working on cars in a garage

As the electric market continues to expand, more and more Matthews drivers are curious about their new electric model’s upkeep. Do electric cars need oil changes? Do electric cars have a transmission that needs to be serviced? With so many unknowns, it can be daunting to start planning your routine maintenance! That’s why the service team at Hendrick Porsche has gathered a list of eight of the most frequently asked EV service questions we receive at our Charlotte service center. Learn answers to questions like, “Do electric cars have horsepower?” with the team at Hendrick Porsche below!

1. Do Electric Cars Need Oil?

Do electric cars need oil or oil changes? Electric vehicles, by definition, are powered using an electric motor and battery system. As such, there is no gas-powered combustion engine under the hood, meaning there is no need for oil changes. Oil’s purpose in a car is to lubricate the moving parts of your combustion engine – without that engine, there’s no reason for oil!

Note: Hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles use an electric powertrain and a combustion engine to fuel your drives around Indian Trail. These models will still need regular oil changes to keep you moving on your daily drives.

2. Do Electric Cars Have Horsepower?

Do electric cars have horsepower? Yes, though some manufacturers will measure the electric motor’s horsepower in “kilowatts” instead of horsepower. To get the horsepower equivalent of any measurement using kilowatts, search “kw to hp” in your favorite search engine and use one of the converters at the top of the page.

3. Do Electric Cars Have a Transmission?

Do electric cars have a transmission? Yes, but it may not be the type of transmission you’d find on a gas-powered vehicle! A traditional transmission uses several gears with varying ratios to output the power created by your engine. Electric motors, on the other hand, produce the same amount of torque regardless of RPM within a specific range. This allows for simpler one- or two-gear transmissions instead of traditional transmissions, which tend to have six to ten gears.

4. Do Electric Cars Have Alternators?

Do electric cars have alternators? No. EVs, plug-in hybrids, and hybrid vehicles have a DC-to-DC converter instead, which recharges your vehicle’s smaller 12-volt accessory battery using the larger electric battery pack.

5. Do Electric Cars Have Catalytic Converters?

No, electric cars do not have catalytic converters. The purpose of a catalytic converter is to reduce the harmful byproducts of an internal combustion engine and, without a combustion engine, there’s no need for a converter on an EV.

6. Do Electric Cars Have Exhaust Systems?

No, electric vehicles do not have exhaust systems. As mentioned, electric cars are powered by an electric motor and battery system instead of a traditional gas-powered engine. As such, they do not create exhaust, removing the need for an exhaust system.

7. Do Electric Cars Have Heaters/Do Electric Cars Have Air Conditioning?

Yes! The heating and cooling systems in your vehicle use the electricity stored in the battery pack to adjust the temperature inside your cabin. Since they pull resources from the electric battery system, excessive or inefficient use of these systems may impact your EV range.

8. Do Electric Cars Last Longer Than Gas Cars?

While electric cars are still relatively new on the market, electric vehicles do have the benefit of requiring less maintenance than traditional gas-powered models! Thanks to a simplified powertrain system, there are fewer moving parts in an EV that cause wear and tear – leading to a longer projected lifespan for electric cars.
