Fans can ride with Dale Jr.

Fans can 'Ride with Dale Jr.' in the AMP Energy 500
CONCORD, N.C. (April 22, 2008) - If Dale Earnhardt Jr. goes to Victory Lane in the Oct. 5 AMP Energy 500 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, he will bring the names of more than 70,000 members of JR Nation with him.

To become one of the many people who will catch a "Ride with Dale Jr.," all consumers need is one can of AMP Energy drink and a computer. Beginning April 22, Earnhardt fans can simply take the code found on the bottom of any AMP Energy can, log onto www.AMPEnergy.com and register. The first 70,000 will have their names featured on the special No. 88 AMP Energy "Ride with Dale Jr."/National Guard Chevrolet paint scheme.

But the program doesn't end there.

AMP Energy will include each and every person who signs up to "Ride with Dale Jr." by the July 1 deadline by featuring additional names on Earnhardt's pit wall banner, car cover and other areas around Talladega Superspeedway during the AMP Energy 500 weekend.

"My fan base at Talladega is incredible, so it's a fitting place for this program," said Earnhardt, who has won five times at the 2.66-mile superspeedway. "I'm proud of my sponsor, AMP Energy, for giving my fans an opportunity to ride along with me and my team for the AMP Energy 500 in October. It's a great promotion, and I can't wait to see how many people sign up to ride along with us."

For AMP Energy, the "Ride with Dale Jr." program is an opportunity to uniquely involve Earnhardt's avid fan base in the AMP Energy 500 weekend at Talladega.

"We want every member of JR Nation to be there with Dale Jr. as he goes for victory in the very first AMP Energy 500 race," said Ralph Santana, vice president of sports, media and interactive marketing, Pepsi-Cola North America. "To have Dale compete with this special AMP Energy paint scheme, surrounded by his fans, will be the ideal way for us to launch our title sponsorship at Talladega."

AMP Energy is a co-primary sponsor of Earnhardt's No. 88 Chevrolet and the title sponsor of the AMP Energy 500 at Talladega. Launched in 2001 as a brand extension of the original energy drink, Mountain Dew, AMP Energy is continuing Mountain Dew's heritage in racing.

Watch as Bryce Miller and the Farnbacher-Loles 911 GT3 Cup Car tear it up against Roger Garbow and the Farnbacher-Loles Porsche Cayman GTR during the opening ceremonies for the 2008 New York International Auto Show.

NYPD and New York State Police helped close down 11th Avenue for them to have a good time. Who won? It was close, but the GT3 Cup crossed the line a bit faster than the Cayman GTR.

911 Still the Backbone of Porsche

Wolfgang Durheimer has the job most young German auto engineers dream of: He's head of R&D at Porsche, responsible for all new products from the storied sports-car maker. Young, energetic, confident, Durheimer has been responsible for some of the best Porsches ever, including the Cayman coupe, the 911 GT3, and the new 911 GT2 that blew us away last month.
I mentioned how impressed we were with the new GT2, a 911 that in the past has never been as crisp or coherent as the naturally aspirated GT3. Durheimer quickly listed why the car is better -- revised front-axle geometry, improved turbos, standard carbon-ceramic brakes, aluminum doors, and a dozen other details -- then lets slip one more staggering statistic: The new GT2 has lapped the legendary Nurburgring Nordschliefe in the same time as the ultra-exotic, ultra-expensive, V-10 powered, carbon-fiber-bodied Carerra GT.

Earnhardt Jr. featured on ESPN The Magazine 10th anniversary cover

Five-time NASCAR Most Popular Driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. is among a select group of professional sports stars featured on unique covers for ESPN The Magazine's 10th anniversary issue, released this week.

The double-sided special edition features 10 covers, five on each side and in random order. The front half highlights athletes who have dominated their respective sport in the last 10 years -- baseball's Ichiro Suzuki, NFL running back LaDainian Tomlinson, pro basketball player Tim Duncan, tennis sisters Venus and Serena Williams, and professional snowboarder Shaun White. The flip side is devoted to athletes believed to shine over the next 10 years -- Earnhardt Jr., pro basketball player LeBron James, hockey star Sidney Crosby, New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez and NFL quarterback Vince Young. Earnhardt Jr.'s cover was shot by photographer Matt Jones, who shows the driver not in typical NASCAR attire but in a single-breasted Armani suit and tie. This marks the third time Earnhardt Jr. has appeared on the cover of ESPN The Magazine. He and Matt Kenseth shared the cover for the 1999 NASCAR Preview, and he alone was the subject of a cover story in the Feb. 18, 2002 edition. "It was a real honor to be included in this 10th anniversary project for ESPN The Magazine," Earnhardt Jr. said. "It's humbling to be among athletes of this caliber. I hope ESPN is correct in that we can generate a few headlines in the next 10 years. I feel like we can." Prominent in each of the 10 cover shots is a diamond-studded ESPN The Magazine hat designed by jeweler Lorraine Schwartz. The hat includes 760 round white diamonds, 108 round black diamonds, and 40 ruby baguettes. Each athlete signed the hat, which will be auctioned off for charity. In addition to the 10 covers, each athlete was photographed in settings of special meaning or personal significance for the inside pages. In homage to the history of NASCAR and his racing roots, Earnhardt Jr. took ESPN The Magazine to his vintage gas station in Mooresville, N.C., where photographer Sarah Friedman shot Earnhardt Jr. and his 1972 Camaro. "I have a great appreciation for the history of NASCAR where I grew up in Kannapolis," Earnhardt Jr. said. "This old-school gas station reminds me of that town, where the old cotton mill was the big industry. It's all torn down now, and I'm real nostalgic for it." ESPN The Magazine's 10th anniversary edition is on newsstands now. Fans can also log on to www.espnthemag.com for behind-the-scenes footage of each athlete at their respective photo shoots, as well as prominent feature articles that have appeared in the magazine during its first 10 years of publication.
